Saline nebulisation promotes the self-clearing function of the airways by moistening the mucous membranes or loosening the mucus. This makes it an effective method in the prevention and treatment of airway problems such as colds, bronchitis, COPD or asthma. Sea air helps those with airway diseases, but you can enjoy similar benefits at home.
Isotonic saline solutions moisten the airways
Isotonic saline solution has the same salt content as bodily fluids (0.9% NaCl) and so moistens the mucous membranes. That strengthens the natural protection of the airways and combats various pathogens. It also has a preventative effect1.
Hypertonic saline solutions loosen the mucus and make it easier to cough up
A common cold prompts the mucous membranes to produce too much mucus. Inhaling hypertonic saline solution helps loosen the mucus, making it easier to cough up.

Inhalation with isotonic saline solution with a suitable nebuliser is well-tolerated and does not have any interactions with other drugs [2]. It is ideal for daily respiratory care, especially in winter.
Hypertonic saline solution can briefly make the cough worse, which can help cough up the mucus. If you have chronic respiratory disease with obstructed bronchi, you are advised to discuss it with your doctor.
Inhalation therapy with saline only works with a suitable inhalation device. Saline solutions for inhalation therapy are available in ready-to-use ampoules. These are sterile.
Simply fill the contents of an ampoule into the nebuliser of your inhalation device. With the PARI COMPACT2, inhalation of 2.5 ml isotonic saline solution takes less than seven minutes.
You can inhale comfortably at home with a suitable nebuliser devices. PARI nebuliser devices with can also be used by the entire family. You just need an additional nebuliser chamber.
The inhalation of isotonic saline solution can be used preventatively to keep the mucous membranes moist. Inhalation with saline can also be used for a whole range of other airway problems such as
Inhalation with saline is especially helpful in certain stages of our lives. For example, inhalation therapy with isotonic saline solution for a cold in pregnancy, when you need a treatment without known side effects.
You can inhale every day with isotonic saline solution. During cold and flu season, once to twice a day is ideal to keep the mucous membranes moist. If you already have a cold, it is best if you inhale two to four times a day. If you have a dry cough, use an isotonic saline solution and if you have a build-up of mucus, use a hypertonic solution.
Salt has a much higher boiling point than water. This means that you cannot inhale salt, simply hot steam. The salt is left behind in the bowl or the cooking pot. If salt were to evaporate, it would not be possible to harvest sea salt by evaporation. Unfortunately, the myth of steam inhalation is holding its ground.

Saline nebulisation has many positive effects on the body. Isotonic saline solution moistens the mucous membranes and so supports the natural protective barrier against viruses, allergens and other intruders. Inhalation therapy with hypertonic saline solution helps loosen the mucus so it can be coughed up. Saline solutions cannot be inhaled with hot steam, as the salt does not evaporate.
