This is why device selection in COPD matters!
These are the key points from Prof. Usmani´s EMJ Interview:

  • Thoroughly assess inhalation technique of your patients: Inhalation technique errors are common and go unnoticed by the patient. Patients often attribute lack of efficacy to the medication, instead of handling errors.
  • Nebulisers are crucial for some patient groups. Patients with suboptimal Peak Inspiratory Flow (sPIF) or impaired manual dexterity can benefit from switching to nebulisers.
  • Efficiency is key when choosing a nebuliser. There are big differences between nebulisers.

There is an objective parameter for nebuliser efficiency.

  • The more medication that reaches the lungs per minute, the more efficient a nebuliser system is.
  • Respirable Drug Delivery Rate (RDDR) describes the amount of therapeutically available aerosol delivered per minute.

Amount of respirable, therapeutically available aerosol generated by a nebuliser
